Yo Sushi is a UK food chain serving up tasty sushi and Japanese style food. It’s not a unique Edinburgh establishment but I still think it’s worth a mention because 1) there are plenty of vegan options available and 2) it’s pretty darn tasty. Plus, the Princes Street branch is particularly special as it has an absolutely cracking view of Edinburgh Castle and the Old Town (see my snaps below)!

Vegan food available at Yo Sushi

When I asked for the vegan menu at Yo Sushi, I was handed a very comprehensive ring-binder that detailed all the allergens in all of their dishes, opened at the dedicated section for vegans. Dog-eared and drink-stained, it had certainly been around the block a few times but I didn’t mind as it listed everything off very clearly. It would be even more wonderful if this information was on the main menu, but I am sure that will come with time.

Anyway, at the time of writing the vegan options are (deep breath):

  • Tofu Katsu Curry
  • Kabocha Katsu
  • Yasai (vegetable) Gyoza
  • Yasai Tempura
  • Miso Soup
  • Miso Dumpling Ramen with Rice
  • Plain Rice
  • Yasai Chanan Rice
  • Plain Noodles
  • Yasai Yakisoba
  • Kappa (cucumber) Maki
  • Inari Sushi
  • Kaiso Sushi
  • Edamame
  • Kaiso Seaweed
  • Harusame Aubergine
  • Fruit
  • Apple Gyoza

Harusame aubergine at Yo Sushi
Harusame Aubergine – a deliciously dark horse

Apple gyoza at Yo Sushi
Apple Gyoza – a tasty vegan dessert that’s not sorbet, hooray!

Were my eyes bigger than my belly? Probably. Did I over-order? Most definitely. Do I regret anything? Not even a little.

I used to have a lukewarm opinion of Yo Sushi, but since I turned vegan I absolutely love it, as they have a pretty decent range of dishes to fill my face with. I always order the tofu katsu curry, which is a main meal in its own right and, speaking as a previous fan of its chicken counterpart, is just as tasty without the meat.

I also always get a side of edamame beans, as you probably know I have a bit of an obsession with them at the moment. Although there are more adventurous and tastier bowls of edamame beans to be found elsewhere, I still find the ones at Yo Sushi really tasty.

Special mention must also go to the harasume aubergine. It looks fairly unassuming on the carousel, but I gave it a try and was really pleasantly surprised with it. The sweet marinade made it very moreish, however the thin slivers of aubergine meant it went down in two seconds flat!

I also love the apple gyoza – a vegan dish that isn’t sorbet or fruit salad (hooray!) these wee bites of heaven also come with a super sweet caramel sauce for dipping – yuuuuuuum. The perfect end to a tasty meal.

As Yo Sushi is all over the UK, you know that tasty Japanese style vegan food is never too far away. Happy days.

YO! Sushi can also be found at Edinburgh Airport and Harvey Nichols on St Andrew Square.
