7 Cockburn Street
Overall score: ★★★★☆
This cosy wee coffee shop just moments away from Waverley Station had been on my radar for a while. I love a good coffee and several friends and colleagues had suggested I check this place out, so it was a happy coincidence that I was invited along one to an intimate gathering one evening which gave me the opportunity to grill the owner (a lovely chap called Mark Donald) about the vegan options.
The Milkman offers a wide range of coffees and teas, and you have the option of either soya or almond milk (albeit with an extra 40p charge) to make your beverage dairy free. If you fancy something sweet with your coffee, the shop gets its tasty cakes and bakes from gluten free bakers Glutteny, who often provide vegan options.
I couldn’t see any vegan cakes left on the evening I went along, but there was also a tempting selection of vegan goodies from Pana Chocolate on offer, so you won’t ever be lost without some kind of sweetness fix here!
Admittedly I only had an espresso while I was there, but the coffee itself was excellent, one of the best I’ve had in a while. I’d love to return and try some of their vegan cake or herbal tea, although given its rapidly growing cult following and cosy wee premises, I might struggle to get a seat!
