Overall score: ★★★★★
I’m quite ashamed that it has taken me so long to get The Forest Café up on the website. This volunteer-run café and arts space is a staple of the Edinburgh social scene, and I guess the main reason that it took me so long to get round to doing a review is that it is so damn obvious that this place does vegan options and always will.
However, that doesn’t mean that it might pass some folks by, especially those who are only in the city for a day or two, so it’s about time that this place got some airtime on the site.
Vegan options at The Forest Café
The Forest Café has a completely vegetarian menu, and everything can be made vegan on request. You can find the options written on a blackboard above the main service area. Gluten-free options are also clearly marked. At the time of writing, the menu was:
- Falafel meal
- Falafel wrap
- Forest burrito
- Vegan chilli
- Soup of the day
- Nachos and chilli
- Cheesey beans on toast
- Hummus and pitta
- A selection of salads
As you can see from the pictures above, the falafel meal is a bit of a beast. And for only £6 a pop, it is excellent value for money. For that, you get some warm balls of falafel, pitta bread, hummus, tortilla chips and a selection of salad. It is really tasty and a generous helping which certainly fills a hole.
The café has a busy arts programme with something going on most days. Last time I went, there was a DJ playing chillout music and burning incense – creating an excellent vibe for a lazy Friday afternoon!
So yeah, if you’re vegan in Edinburgh, The Forest Café is an obvious choice. Pop along and check it out.
