Overall score: ★★★☆☆
For any chocoholic in Edinburgh, a visit to The Chocolate Tree is a must. This cosy chocolaterie in Bruntsfield sells award-winning chocolate in the form of organic couverture bars, ice cream, cake, individual artisan chocolates and much more.
The owners of The Chocolate Tree are very closely involved in the whole chocolate making process, from growing the cacao bean right up to putting the finishing touches on the chocolate bar. They purchase their cacao from farms in Peru, Colombia, Venezuela and Madagascar, paying the growers a fair price and processing the post-harvest cacao to the highest standard to guarantee the finest flavours in the finished product.
As well as a shop with chocolate gifts to take away, The Chocolate Tree has a small seating area where you can sit in and enjoy a hot drink with a slice of something sweet – perfect on a cold Edinburgh day.
Vegan options at The Chocolate Tree
The Chocolate Tree café has a great range of artisan chocolates, chocolate cake, chocolate bars, chocolate sorbet and hot chocolate, many of which are suitable for vegans. The selection on offer changes every day, but most vegan options are clearly marked on the counter.
Their hot drinks, such as coffee and hot chocolate, can be made with soya or oat milk.
Unfortunately, the labelling in the chocolate bar shop is not as clear, but most of the couverture bars are vegan-friendly. If you’re not sure, you can always ask the staff who will be happy to keep you right.
I’ve always been a huge fan of The Chocolate Tree bars and chocolates (they can also be bought online as well as at various retailers in the city), however it was only recently that I popped in for the first time to enjoy a cosy cuppa and cake in their small Bruntsfield café.
Seating is limited, so you might find yourself perched on their wooden bar, but the rich and decadent chocolate treats will more than make up for the intimate seating arrangements.
Who said that vegans can’t indulge in chocolate? If you fancy a wee sweet treat, The Chocolate Tree will not disappoint.
