From the people who brought you The Kitchin, Scran and Scallie is a cosy wee pub and dining room in the fashionable area of Stockbridge. Unlike its fine dining sister in Leith, Scran and Scallie has a much more laid-back atmosphere and specialises in good classic comfort food. But the ethos of “from nature to plate” is still very evident here, and the menu changes seasonally.
Vegan food at Scran and Scallie
If you mention to your server that you are vegan, you will be supplied with your own separate vegan menu. Because Scran and Scallie make their food from scratch, they are able to cater for a wide range of dietary requirements, and veganism is no exception.
Here are the options at the time of writing:
- Pumpkin soup
- Autumn veg salad
- Ragoût of seasonal vegetables
- Beetroot and lentil burger, toasted sourdough and chips
- Coconut rice pudding and apples
- Seasonal sorbet and fruits
How much does it cost?
The good news is that the vegan offering is a little less expensive than the regular menu, but it still doesn’t come cheap. The meal above came to £30.80, including drinks. The burger alone was £11.50.
Is it any good?
I had the lentil and beetroot burger followed by the rice pudding and apples. The lentil and beetroot patty was lovely, with a rich smokey flavour and chunky walnuts throughout. The sourdough bread was a bit of a let-down, though. I seem to be running out of patience for places that won’t serve their vegan burgers in a proper roll, and these two slices of bread were really hand and made the burger quite difficult to eat.
The chips, on the other hand, were absolutely delicious. Thick, chunky and crispy, these are definitely some of the nicest chips you’ll find in the city! You get a really decent portion of them too, which is good.
The coconut rice pudding was creamy and satisfying, with the seasonal apples giving a little extra sweetness and flavour. The texture was lovely and smooth, and a great way to end the meal on a chilly autumn day.
With the shorter and colder days coming in, a trip to Scran and Scallie might just be what the doctor ordered this winter. It’s great to see another popular Edinburgh gastropub cater so well to vegans, so pay this place a visit and treat yourself to some top-notch comfort food.
