In the last few years, it has been really heartening to see an influx of mainstream hotel brands really get on board with catering for vegans. In Edinburgh, we’ve seen Hilton Doubletree and Waldorf Astoria create some really inventive vegan options, and now Chez Mal by Malmaison has happily followed suit with their own dedicated vegan menu.

The Malmaison Hotel is located in the beautiful Shore area of Leith, an area already renowned for its fine dining scene. The building itself has an unmistakable fort-like appearance, with a grand clock rising out of the top. On the ground floor you’ll find the hotel’s bistro and restaurant, Chez Mal, with plenty of outdoor seating to enjoy the long summer evenings.

To celebrate the launch of their new vegan offering, Mr B and I were invited along to try Chez Mal’s summer menu. And trust me, it did not disappoint.

Mr B and I were really impressed by the food at Chez Mal. To start, I had the grilled vegetables with red pepper houmous, which was really tasty and light. Mr B went for the slightly more decadent vegetable tempura, which he thoroughly enjoyed and was one of his personal highlights of the meal.

I had the squash and red onion tagine for main. It was rich and sweet, topped with moreish crispy kale. Mr B enjoyed the Thai green curry, which was served with a generous helping of jasmine sticky rice and a basket of flatbreads.

The dessert was my favourite course. You don’t get much more summery than tropical pineapple, and my dessert of caramel roasted fruit with sorbet offered a lovely light way to end the meal. Mr B opted for the colourful chocolate fondue, with was lovely and rich, unlike other more watery offerings we’ve had elsewhere.

The vegan menu at Chez Mal is wonderful, and it’s fantastic to see yet another mainstream brand cater so well for vegans. With some tasty imaginative dishes and a beautiful waterside setting, this is the perfect place to spoil yourself, celebrate a special occasion or impress your fellow dining companions with how exciting vegan dining can really be!
