Overall score: ★★★★★
Hummus is a lovely wee Middle Eastern café that has just opened up in the heart of Morningside. This new establishment is completely vegetarian and specialises in breakfast, coffee, tea, lunch and snacks.
The seating is pretty limited, with just a couple of bars and a small table outside. If you manage to grab a seat you can enjoy the intimate and cosy setting, but if you’re not as lucky you can always get your food to go as well.
Vegan food at Hummus
The ordering system is pretty casual at Hummus. You can see what’s available in the bar or on the board hanging above the service area. The vegan options are clearly marked with a green (V) and everything is available to either sit-in or takeaway. At the time of writing, these are the dishes that are suitable for vegans:
Breakfast
- Mixed bean breakfast
Meza
- Spinach pastries
- Hummus
- Baba ganoush
- Olives
- Stuffed vine leaves
Meza salads
- Tabbouleh
- Fattoush
- Green beans
- Bulgar and chickpeas
Falafel
- Falafel salad
- Falafel wrap
Soup
- Soup of the day served with a roll

Mr B opted for the falafel wrap, while I went a bit bananas and ordered pretty much all the meza dishes: stuffed vine leaves; spinach pastry; tabbouleh; baba ganoush; and a wee bit of hummus to try, why not?! We finished off by sharing a vegan crunch bar, which made eyes at us from across the café as we ate our savoury food.
Did I over-order? Probably. Was I super-stuffed afterwards? Yes. Do I regret it? Not even a little.
The falafel wrap went down well with Mr B. It was a bit on the salty side for him and there was a fair bit of ‘drippage’ from the tahini dressing, but the falafel itself was really tasty.
I absolutely loved putting together my own little meza meal from all the options available, and when I couldn’t decide between the baba ganoush and the hummus, the kind staff gave me a little sampler to try. I personally preferred the baba ganoush, which had a lovely smoky flavour and worked really well as a dip for my pitta bread and spinach pastry. The tabbouleh salad was also lovely and fresh, and the stuffed vine leaves were delish.
This is a lovely wee addition to Morningside. I have high hopes for this Middle Eastern veggie heaven, and will definitely be back soon for another tasty lunch – although I will try and not over-order next time!
