Planning to dine somewhere special? Eating vegan doesn’t mean you have to miss out on the finer things in life.

There are lots of places that offer a vegan fine (and, in some cases, Michelin-starred) dining experience. Perfect for celebrating that special occasion or just treating yourself!

David Bann

56-58 St Mary’s Street, Edinburgh EH1 1SX

Of all the vegetarian restaurants in Edinburgh, David Bann is certainly the most formal. This restaurant is just off the Royal Mile and is a cult favourite with many Edinburgh residents.

David Bann doesn’t do a tasting menu, but its a la carte offering is completely meat-free and has a few good vegan options. The aubergine, chickpea and cashew kofta and stir-fried vegetables and aduki beans with noodles and smoked tofu are firm favourites.

187 Great Junction Street, Leith EH6 5LQ

Aurora is a small restaurant in the heart of Leith which offers a tasting menu in a laid-back setting. They have two menus – one regular, and one vegan. You can pick and choose between the two for each course, perfect if you have some non-vegan dining companions who would like to give some of the vegan options a try.

The menu changes throughout the year to make the most of local seasonal produce, and the results are wonderful. Add a non-alcoholic drinks pairing or plant-based “cheese” course to make your meal extra-special.

Ivy on the Square

6 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh EH2 2BD

The Ivy has several locations in the UK and while I don’t normally cover large national chains, this is a well-renowned restaurant that’s perfect for celebrating a special occasion.

This restaurant has a separate vegan / vegetarian menu and many of the dishes are Asian inspired, such as the tossed Asian salad or Keralan sweet potato curry. The avocado and tomato cocktail is also a showstopper with Instagrammable appeal!

The Kitchin

78 Commercial Street, Leith EH6 6LX

The Kitchin is the Michelin-starred flagship restaurant of celebrity chef Tom Kitchin. They have a vegetarian tasting menu and can create a vegan menu on request. Booking ahead is essential.

While this certainly is a special place to dine, it has been recently tarred with controversy over allegations of workplace bullying. However, this is something the management is working to address.

7-8 Queensferry Street, Edinburgh EH2 4PA

Out of all the places on this list, Vesta is probably the most relaxed. But it’s still worth a mention. This restaurant works in close collaboration with Social Bite, so you can enjoy your meal knowing you are also doing a little good for the community.

For something a little different, you can try their avocado and chilli focaccia, or cauliflower buffalo “wings”. Or you can go for a vegan burger and chips for something more relaxed. Pair with something from their extensive cocktail menu to give your meal a little extra sparkle.

These are the places I have managed to try so far, but I have also heard great things about these restaurants too:

I haven’t managed to verify them personally yet, but I plan to report back and update this page once I have had the chance to eat through them all…
