Overall score: ★★★★☆
The Brass Monkey is a popular watering hole on Leith Walk, with lots of nooks and crannies to enjoy a quiet drink with pals. The place has a good vibe and there’s a nice section up the back which has a big screen streaming Film 4 or a similar movie channel. It’s a good wee local pub and I was so happy to discover that its kitchen caters for vegans!
Vegan Food available at The Brass Monkey
The Brass Monkey has a couple of vegan options, all of which are clearly marked on the menu – hooray! At the time of writing, these are:
- Spiced bean and pepper veggie chilli fries
- Spiced bean and pepper veggie chilli bowl with tortilla chips or rice and salsa
- Vegan curry served with rice and flatbread (changes every day – check the specials board for the latest)
- Vegan chilli dog veggie sausages on a baguette with spiced bean and pepper chilli, beer soaked onions and mustard with fries and slaw
All of the dishes above are currently priced under a tenner, so the food here is pretty decent value for money.
I love going along for a vegan chilli dog and a pub quiz, which happens on a Monday night. Just make sure you get along early, or make a reservation for a table!
The chilli dog is a really generous portion and a satisfying meal. With a rich sauce and a decent serving of onions, the dish is hot but not too spicy. The fries that go along with it are super moreish – just as you would expect.
With a great atmosphere and nice wee selection of options, I would definitely recommend the Brass Monkey for a bite to eat. It’s the perfect place to meet up with friends and you never know – you might be in with a chance of winning the pub quiz jackpot!
