Overall score: ★★★★★

There are some cracking breakfast options in Edinburgh for brunch, but bbl (breakfast, brunch and lunch) is one of my (and Mr B’s) favourites. This unassuming greasy-spoon style café is hidden away on The Pleasance, but it’s a wee gem for vegan eats.  If you’re craving a cruelty-free comfort food fix – this is the place to go.

Vegan food available at bbl

bbl have a fab range of vegan options and, even better, they are clearly signposted as soon as you walk in the door! As you can see from the pictures below, there is a super helpful sign that lists all the options in one place.  At the time of writing, these are:

  • All day breakfast
  • Vegan burger
  • Vegan haggis panini
  • Baked potato and vegan haggis
  • Vegan lorne sausage roll
  • Vegan link sausage roll
  • Vegan bacon roll
  • Vegan haggis roll

And yes – the food is just as good as it looks. The lorne and link sausages, made freshly on the premises, are succulent and satisfying without being overly salty (a common complaint I have with fake meats). This breakfast really hit the spot – even Mr B scraped his plate clean! If you’re hungover, searching for some comfort food or just after a proper fry-up, I cannot recommend bbl highly enough.

[…] I had the falafel fantastica sandwich, and simply swapped out the hummus for mushrooms. While it was a tasty combo, I think it was a little bit on the dry side due to the lack of hummus. However, the Sunrise Smooth smoothie that I slurped alongside it was delicious. Mr B happily munched his vegan sausage sandwich, but he said it wasn’t a patch on the cheap and cheerful offering at BBL. […]
