Overall score: ★★★★★
The Auld Hoose has a bit of a legendary status in the vegan Edinburgh foodie scene. Ask any vegan in the city where their favourite places to eat are and it’s very likely this rock pub on St Leonards Street will get a mention. And for good reason too – they have a huge range of indulgent vegan dishes (all clearly marked on the menu – hooray!) making it the perfect spot for a super foodie blow-out.
Vegan options at The Auld Hoose
The Auld Hoose has a huge menu bursting with vegan twists on old comfort food classics. These include:
- Vegan full cooked breakfast
- Vegan onion rings
- Vegan spring rolls
- Vegan nachos
- Vegan burritos
- Vegan hot dogs
- Vegan falafel burger
- Vegan sorbet sundae
Did I mention that The Auld Hoose boasts the city’s largest plate of nachos? And did I mention that it also comes in a vegan variety? Mr B and I ordered the “standard” portion of nachos with a “side” of onion rings, but nothing could quite prepare us for the beast of a meal we were presented with.
Hold on to your hats, people – this is about to get intense.
Safe to say the vegan nachos did not disappoint. The mountain of food included a layer of tortilla chips, covered in melty and stringy vegan cheese (some of the best I’ve had in the city so far), bean chilli, jalapenos and guacamole. It was absolutely delicious, albeit incredibly filling. The menu recommends the portion is enough to share between two people, but Mr B and I were barely able to conquer half of it.
It might have been something to do with the fact we ordered a “side” portion of onion rings. Thinking it might make a nice wee addition to the meal, we were confronted with – I kid you not – a pole of rings that was probably about half a metre high. They came with a tempting selection of side dips including guacamole, sweet chilli and barbeque, but again we couldn’t finish off the whole thing.
I thought there must be some kind of mistake – we must have been served the jumbo portion by accident – surely. But no, when we left I double-checked with the staff who told me that the “large” portion of nachos is three times the size of what we got served.
So if you come to The Auld Hoose – come with a ravenous appetite!
