If, like me, you are partial to a drop of gin or two, then you need to check out 56 North. This lovely bar just across from the main University of Edinburgh campus has a gin menu as thick as an encyclopaedia – perfect if you want to expand you gin horizons!
It’s also good to know that vegans won’t go hungry here either, as a recent browse of their food menu revealed a couple of decent vegan options. It’s also dog-friendly, so you can also bring your four-legged friend along if you wish – the folk at 56 North be happy to provide a bowl of water if you ask.
Vegan food at 56 North
As well as their robust gin selection, 56 North has a food menu with a couple of options that are suitable for vegans.
For starters, their Soup of the Day served with warmed ciabatta changes daily, but will always be suitable for vegans.
For your main course, you can have the Veggie Gourmet Burger, made with sweet potato falafel and hummus, however you will be charged an extra £1.00 for the vegan and gluten-free bun. Alternatively, you can ask veggie version for the Coconut Lemon Curry, made with coconut milk, sweet potato, spinach and coriander and served on wild basmati rice.
I normally go to 56 North for the gin, but it’s great to see that they have a vegan-friendly food menu, too. The burger certainly filled a hole, but I would really like to try the lemon coconut curry next time.
Ideally, I would like to see a couple more choices and not be charged extra for the bun, but overall it’s a good start from one of my favourite bars. Go for the food – stay for the gin 😉
