Based a wee bit out of Edinburgh city centre, the Raj Restaurant in Blackhall is your classic Indian restaurant. It serves up all the old favourites, many of which are free of both meat and dairy.
There are lots of vegan options available at the Raj Restaurant. Essentially, if you see anything vegetarian on the menu that doesn’t have yoghurt or cream in the description you’re probably good to go, but as always ask your server to make sure.
The naan bread isn’t vegan, but if you ask for a roti (it isn’t on the menu, but they will be happy to make it for you), that is a decent alternative.
The last time I went both myself and my dining partner took the vegan route. For starters, I had the onion bhaji which was a nice small portion to start with, served with a lovely side salad. The bhajis were a little bit overcooked on the outside in my opinion, but they were well done on the inside.
For mains, my partner had the bombay potatoes while I had the vegetarian version of “lamb rogan josh”. Rather than using meat, the rich tomato sauce was filled with veggies such as onions, potatoes, peas and cabbage. I like to think that I have a pretty good head for spice, but even so this dish was a little bit hotter than I usually would like it. It was still quite enjoyable though, and I scoffed up a fair bit before my belly could take no more.
Even though the Raj Restaurant strikes me as quite a traditional place, their menu is full of options that are suitable for vegans, and their servers were knowledgeable enough to talk me through the options. For a nice dose of comfort food in Blackhall, I would highly recommend it.
