Las Iguanas is a popular chain in the UK which specialises in South American food and drink. It has a nice location at the West End of Edinburgh’s George Street, with a large dining area over two floors with warm and welcoming decor and a nice informal bar area.

I like it for two reasons: 1) the wide variety of vegan options and 2) the super-cheap cocktails!

Vegan dishes at Las Iguanas, Edinburgh

When you arrive at Las Iguanas, ask for the vegetarian menu. Not everything is vegan here, but it clearly states which dishes can be made vegan, unlike the regular menu.

The only gripe I have with the vegetarian menu is that it is completely a-la-carte, so you can’t take advantage of any offers. I went along with some chums for lunch and while they were able to take their pick of the cheaper lunch dishes, I had to go for the full-sized and full-priced offering. (Correction – the folks at Las Iguanas say that the veggie chilli is on the lunch menu and safe for vegans!)

That aside, Las Iguanas really does have a cracking choice for vegans. I took notes from the menu and at the time of writing the restaurant offers:

  • Fiesta salad (with butternut squash, carrot, cucumber, avocado and more)
  • Three mushroom fajitas
  • Cranberry and avocado salad
  • Quinoa salad
  • Moqueca de palmitos (creamy South American curry with a coconut sauce)
  • Veggie chilli

And for pudding

  • Mango sorbet (good ol’ faithful)
  • Tembleque (a coconut cream and berry dessert)

Just remember to ask for the vegan version when you order.

As you can see from my pictures above, I ordered the three mushroom fajitas (I love how it sizzles when it comes to your table). To make it vegan, you need to swap out the sour cream with either jalapenos, salsa, or guacamole. The full sized portion comes with six tortillas (although they are quite small) and a sizzling plate of tasty veggies.

I always have this dish when I go to Las Iguanas – it’s really tasty and with the extra guacamole has the potential to be really satisfying. Plus, with all of the omni options, it’s a great place to go with your meat-eating friends.
