Sure, Jamie’s Italian is a chain, and I always try to eat in independent places where I can. But, when I first turned vegan, I found that chains were generally a lot better at labelling their menus so I ended up gravitating to places like this… at least for a while.
Anyway, no matter your attitude towards chains, you can’t deny that Jamie’s Italian has a range of options that can be made vegan which are clearly signposted on the menu. Some modifications need to be made, so you still need to mention to your server, but it’s good to know your options right off the bat.
Vegan options available at Jamie’s Italian Edinburgh
Jamie’s Italian has a few salads that can be made vegan, but whenever I go I like to go for the turbo penne arrabbiata. For desert, there is a range of sorbets to choose from that are also safe for vegans.
The last time I went my dining companion opted for the non-vegan arrabbiata, so it was interesting to compare the two when they arrived at our table. Indeed her dish was covered in parmesan and breadcrumbs, whereas mine looked a bit barer with just a handful of chillies. The pasta looked different too, with my version looking like a whole-wheat version compared with her paler pasta that must have included egg or something.
Most of the dessert menu is off-limits for vegans but it was nice to finish the meal with a bowl of sorbet – good ol’ faithful!
Jamie’s Italian didn’t blow my mind but you know what you are getting – and it is nice to know that I am covered with chains like these if I struggling to find anywhere else.
A safe option.
