Overall score: ★★★★★

Like many Edinburgh locals, Illegal Jacks has a special place in my heart. Thanks to its delicious food and an owner that is very savvy on social media, this tex-mex restaurant has a very loyal cult following.

How loyal, you ask? Loyal enough to fund an entire move and rebuild when the ceiling caved in. That’s how loyal.

The community loves Jack almost as much as Jack loves the Edinburgh community. He’s never far away on Twitter and he prides himself in using local suppliers as much as he can for his food and drink offering.

Illegal Jacks is quintessential Edinburgh and definitely worth a visit.

Jack has recently made some improvements to his menu. With the introduction of jackfruit carnitas and vegan cheese, over half of Illegal Jacks food is now vegan-friendly. All of the options are clearly marked on the menu, but at the time of writing here is the Tex-Mex munch that’s on offer:

This is what a half eaten burrito looks like…

I used to love Illegal Jacks as an omnivore and I am delighted to say as a vegan that Jack still doesn’t disappoint! The BBQ jackfruit filling in the quesadilla is deliciously satisfying, and the cheese adds some beautiful melty goodness.

We also ordered the regular veggie haggis burrito – which, by the way, is HUGE. Filled with delicious beans, salsa, rice, vegan cheese and veggie haggis, this gorgeous creation is bound to leave you crying with happiness!

There are lots of tex-mex places in Edinburgh, but very few of them can rival Illegal Jacks with its delicious and imaginative choices for vegans. If you’re wanting something a bit more than your standard veggie burrito, this is the place to be.
