If you’ve been along Tollcross/Bruntsfield way recently, you may have spotted a new addition to the Lochrin Buildings. Grassroots Health Ltd opened up last month (April 2017), adding a new vegan-friendly shop and café to this vibrant part of town.
Stocking some of the top vegan suppliers in the area, I couldn’t wait to pop along and see what was on offer.
Vegan food available at Grassroots Health Ltd
Jo and Dean at Grassroots Health have curated a great range of food from a whole host of local vegan bakers and makers. These include:
- Doughnuts from The Doughnut Family (deliveries are on a Monday, Thursday and Saturday – and once they’re gone, they’re gone!)
- Cupcakes from Missy’s Vegan Cupcakes
- Pies from Cool Jerk Vegan Pies
- Raw desserts from Blitz Patisserie
These are all available to eat sit-in and takeaway. You can also try their daily specials, which often include deliciousness such as:
- Jo’s “Veaty Chease” sandwich, made with seitan fresh on the premises
- Vegan quiche, with fillings such as broccoli and fried pepper or mushroom and spinach
- Homemade soup
There’s also a vegan shop which has all the essentials, including vegan cheese, faux meats, vegan dog food, whole foods, Ecover cleaning products and even cork bags!
Having tried most of the food by the suppliers above I knew I was onto a good thing before I even stepped into Grassroots Health. Cool Jerk Vegan Pies are always delicious and I’m told that the Doughnut Family doughnuts sell out pretty much as soon as the delivery crosses the threshold!
I wanted to try something a bit different, so I ordered one of Jo’s “veaty chease” sandwiches, made with freshly prepared seitan and a cashew cheese sauce. I opted for the smaller of the two options – going for the sandwich as opposed to the whole ciabatta bun – but it was still an absolute beast! The fresh lettuce and tomato reminded me of a BLT sandwich, so definitely one to try.
I followed up (somewhat regrettably) with a Nutella cake from Blitz Patisserie. Their cakes look like mini works of art and my chocolate offering tasted delicious too, although it was a bit too rich after my monster sandwich!
The guys at Grassroots Health have done a great job of pulling together the best of vegan suppliers in Edinburgh to create a varied menu that is completely vegan-friendly. With a nice mix of both naughty and nice options, I would highly recommend popping in for a spot of lunch.
