In case you’re wondering… it’s pronounced “Chow-pry-aaa”.

I was recently invited to Chaophraya Edinburgh to try out their new menu, and I was pleasantly surprised to find that there are a lot of vegan options on the menu. Simply ask your server and they will be able to chat you through them.

Vegan food available at Chaophraya Edinburgh

Both the red and green vegetable curries can be made vegan (just let your server know when you order), and they have a wide range of tasty starters to choose from including the vegetable tempura , mushroom tom-kha soup and sweetcorn cakes. The dessert menu is a little bit more restrictive but there’s a selection of good ol’ sorbets to save the day.

You can also ask to see the StarChef app, which is available on tablets in the restaurant and breaks down the nutritionals of all of the dishes, with filters that can be applied for all kinds of dietary requirements, including vegan.

The sweetcorn cakes really are something else – you know you’re onto a good thing when your meat-loving husband wants to swap dishes with you! These gorgeous bites of heaven were sweet and had a good kick to them, with the sweet chilli a moreish dip accompaniment.

I ordered the Thai red curry for my main but it wasn’t until halfway through my meal I realised that I had been served the green curry instead – I clearly didn’t mind though! This satisfyingly hot yet creamy sauce came with a rainbow of tasty vegetables including aubergine, sugar snap peas and courgettes – absolutely beautiful when combined with the plain sticky rice.

The sorbets were equally lovely, and I tried scoop each of the mango and the lime and lemongrass. I must admit I preferred the mango flavour,  but rest assured it was a very close contest.

With vegan options ready to go right off the menu, I wouldn’t think twice about returning again to Chaophraya. The food was amazing and being on the 4th floor of a city centre office block, you get incredible views of the city skyline. Perfect for a romantic meal or a special celebration.
